Blue on the Balcony

Creative Paintbrush Thicket sat in the middle of Super Canvas Forestropolis like a shiny square cake with four tall paintbrush towers stuck in it.

On the balcony catwalk, Creative Paintbrush Buck leaned on the rail. His black supersuit squeaked a little where it met his bright blue gloves.

"The skyway stripes are crooked," he said, watching little paint-drones zip past and spray neat lines on the road below.

Creative Paintbrush Doe tapped her wrist screen. "Tower Three camera says the drones are fine. Your eyes are dramatic."

Buck snorted and scrolled the city feed on his phone.

A red banner popped up: CLEAN COLOR COUNCIL ALERT.

Under it was a blurry photo. A deer in a light blue cape stood near a mural covered in sloppy blue splashes.

"That is not—" Buck started, voice rising.

Doe put a gloved hand on his arm. "Wait. Look at the cape hem."

Another ping. "Fresh paint on the east gate. Two minutes ago."

From inside the fortress, the alarm began to buzz

Foam on the Gate

Buck and Doe sprinted down the spiral ramp, past a vending wall that sold snack tubes and glove polish.

At the east gate, fresh blue paint dripped in fat drops. It smelled like sour candy.

Buck lifted his phone. “I was on the balcony. The cameras—”

A small shuttle slid in and hissed to a stop. A human woman in a white jacket stepped out, holding a paint scanner like a hair dryer.

“Inspector Mira Quill,” she said. “Clean Color Council. Buck, your brush access is frozen. Your suit is on a public color hold.”

Buck’s ears shot up. “You cannot do that. I—”

Doe, the other humanoid deer, grabbed his blue glove and whispered, “Don’t.”

A boy with a backpack bounced near the gate, blowing soap bubbles. One floated into the wet paint and popped.

The paint spread in a wide, neat fan, like it had been pushed with a hidden brush.

Mira’s eyes narrowed. “Scan his cape hem. Now.”
