The Hotel That Wouldn’t Stop Copying
Listen to audiobook
A Spare Door
Crayon Marker Cow dropped from the sky and landed on the soft, springy grass of Crayon Marker Ranch.
Two hotels faced her like siblings who did not share toys: the Crayon Hotel, all waxy curves, and the Marker Hotel, shiny as a new phone screen.
Her own phone buzzed.
“Craft Room City Alert: Marker Hotel upgrade! Faster check-in!”
She snorted. “Fast is how trouble sneaks in.”
Inside the Marker Hotel, the lobby smelled like fresh ink and lemon cleaner. Her boots squeaked on the slick floor.
A little robot rolled up behind the front desk. It was shaped like a fat marker.
“Welcome!” its screen-face blinked green eyes. “I am Deskly. Smile for scanning.”
“Already smiling,” she said, holding still.
Deskly whirred and spat out a room badge.
Down a side hallway, a door popped open: COPY ROOM—STAFF ONLY.
For half a second, two identical suitcases rolled out on their own—then the door snapped shut.
Room With a Receipt
The elevator walls were glass, so Crayon Marker Cow could see Craft Room City flashing below like a circuit board.
Her room door beeped at her badge. Inside, everything was white and squeaky-clean, even the pillows.
A tiny delivery bot rolled in. It was shaped like a short marker with wheels and a pop-open lid.
“Welcome kit,” it chirped, and dropped a cardboard box on the bed.
Crayon Marker Cow peeled the tape. Inside sat a plastic gadget the size of a sandwich, stamped POCKET COPIER. One button said TEST.
“Testing is fine,” she muttered, and pressed it.
Whirr.
A flat, perfect copy of her badge slid out like a receipt.
Then another.
Then—without her touching anything—three more.
The gadget skittered to the floor, still printing, spitting badges that fanned out under the door.
In the hallway, a human jogger with a neon green jacket stopped short.
A badge copy smacked her nose.
“Ow! What is this?” she said, staring at the name.
Her phone pinged. “Duplicate guest detected,” it read.
At the end of the hall, a new door blinked into place: TEMP ROOM—JUNE P.
