The Lost Dot of Midnight Ink
Listen to audiobook
The Quietest Shelf
Ursa Major pushed open the craft-room tower door. Pen towers poked up outside like giant markers, and dragon statues stared down with stone smiles.
At the inkwell counter, an arctic fox maid tipped a bottle. The ink slid out thin and gray.
“Bedtime pages will look like… nothing,” the maid said.
Ursa’s cape swished as she leaned in. “Show me the pantry.”
The maid—Fenn—trotted to a cabinet with tidy labels. “All the big bottles are here.”
Ursa pulled out a tiny jar marked MIDNIGHT DOT. It was light as a pebble. She turned it over. Nothing fell.
Fenn blinked. “That is… the smallest one.”
Ursa tapped the glass. A black ring clung inside, and it smelled faintly like licorice.
Above them, a window stood open. A line of dark specks dotted the sill.
“Fenn,” Ursa said, gripping her star pen, “lock this cabinet,”
The Puddle Parade
Ursa swung out the open window and dropped into Supply Street, where fat puddles sat between shops like spilled paint.
Her cape snapped in the wind. “Okay, specks,” she muttered, “show me.”
The trail led to a bright laundromat. A banner over the door read: CAPE WASH JAM. Inside, a tiny speaker played bouncy music while people stuffed capes into spinning machines.
A woman in a leather apron slapped a stamp onto a boot sole. “Size eight! Next!” Her short black hair did not move, even when she turned fast.
Ursa stepped up. “Ma’am, that ink smells like licorice.”
“It is my special midnight ink,” the shoemaker said. “Or it was.” She tipped her bottle. Gray water dribbled out.
Across the room, phones pinged. Kids groaned at blank story screens.
Ursa lifted her star pen. “I can fix it.” She aimed a tiny ink blast.
The bottle foamed—pop!—and dark dots sprayed into a wash tub. The dots skated across the suds and slipped toward a floor drain.
“Hey!” The shoemaker blocked Ursa with her arm. “You are wrecking my orders!”
Ursa crouched near the drain. The licorice smell was stronger, and the dots were still moving—down, down, down
