Paper Boats and Quiet Corners

Rain tapped Sky’s dark blue umbrella like tiny fingers.

She walked past puddles and shop lights, her phone screen bright in her hand. A message from a class group chat popped up: “Still pouring lol.” Sky didn’t answer.

Through a café window, Miku leaned close to Neru, their shiny rings catching the streetlight. Their pupils matched, clear and certain. Sky kept walking.

At the next block, a closed bus stop sat empty—except for one girl on the wet ground.

Sky stopped.

Frost clung to the girl’s sleeves like spilled sugar. No hoodie. No coat. Strawberry-blonde twin-tails stuck to her cheeks.

The girl blinked slowly. Black pupils. Blank stare.

“Hey,” Sky said, soft.

The girl didn’t speak.

Sky slid off her own black hoodie and draped it over the girl’s shoulders.

“Can you hold this?” Sky asked, placing the umbrella handle in her hand.

The girl’s fingers twitched.

Sky jogged to the corner shop, paid with her phone, and came back with hot soup.

“Small sips,” Sky said, kneeling.

The cup trembled as the girl lifted it

Steam on the Window

Sky half-walked, half-carried Teto across the street, dodging deep puddles that splashed her sneakers.

A laundromat glowed bright as a fish tank. Sky pushed inside, shaking off her umbrella.

Warm air hummed from spinning dryers. Sky found an empty row of chairs and guided Teto down.

“Hands,” Sky said.

Teto stared at the floor. Her black pupils looked like empty buttons.

Sky fed coins into a dryer, then held the open door like a little cave. “Just for a minute.”

Teto lifted her fingers toward the heat. The frost on her sleeves turned to damp sparkles.

Sky bought two hot chocolates from the vending machine and set one in Teto’s lap. “Sip when you can.”

The door chimed.

Neru stood in the doorway, rain shining on her yellow jacket. Her amber eyes locked on Teto.

“Sky,” Neru said, too cheerful. “You found her? Wow. She’s trouble.”

Sky angled her body in front of Teto.

Neru stepped closer and slid a note under the umbrella on the chair: a phone number and two words—MEET ME.

Teto’s fingers curled around Sky’s sleeve.
