The Paint That Told the Truth
Listen to audiobook
The Quiet Exhibit
Super Artist Lion hovered a few inches off the polished floor, rolling paint onto a wall display that showed tomorrow’s ribbon-cutting. His red cape kept brushing wet spots.
“Sorry,” he muttered, and aimed a tiny paint-blast to dry the edge. The paint still smelled sharp.
On his phone, the fortress livestream played a cheerful tour. A guide’s voice echoed, “Please don’t touch the cases.”
Maya hustled in, hugging a clipboard to her chest.
“Showcase is tonight,” she said. “And the new masterpiece stays perfect. No fixes. No ‘hero touch-ups.’”
He lowered his roller. “I can be careful.”
A glassy case sat by the hall bench, sealed with thick acrylic. Inside was a squat paint jar with a label: TRUTH WHITE—DO NOT SHAKE.
The lights clicked to dim-mode.
From the case, a whisper scraped out.
“Careful?” it said. “Liar. Open this.”
The Puddle Light
“Open this,” the jar rasped again.
Super Artist Lion leaned close to the acrylic case. His black goggles showed his own face, stretched and nervous.
Maya yanked his cape. “No hero stuff. We take it to the wash room. Gloves, masks, rules.”
He grabbed a small rolling cart meant for frames. The case thumped onto it.
As they hustled down the corridor, the ceiling speakers chirped, “Testing sprinklers in ten seconds.”
“Wait—what?” Maya snapped, tapping her phone. “That’s not on my schedule.”
Water hammered down. A fast puddle spread like a cold sheet.
The cart hit the slick floor. The case slid off, cracked, and the jar clinked.
White paint oozed into the puddle. It did not swirl like normal paint. It wrote.
LIAR, it spelled.
Maya’s mouth went tight.
Then: MAYA FIXED HER REPORT. ONE NUMBER.
Maya whispered, “I only changed it in my notes. I was scared I’d get in trouble.”
A shoemaker, Nils, rolled by with a cart of repaired sneakers. “Whoa,” he said, lifting his phone. “This is going in the staff chat.”
The puddle wrote faster: SEAL ME OR I TALK TO HIM
