The Spare Cape

Creative Deer Thicket looked like a metal briar patch, all curved walls and glass “leaves,” shining above Super Forest City.

On the roof track, Creative Mother Deer jogged in her black-and-blue supersuit. Her light blue cape snapped behind her.

Clara squinted at her phone stopwatch.

“Forty-three powers,” Clara said. “But you still can’t beat my timing.”

Clarice held her own phone up. “Mine says you’re slower by two seconds.”

Creative Mother Deer smiled. “Your devices are arguing again.”

A wrist screen on her suit buzzed: INCOMING GUEST. HERO CLEARANCE.

At the main gate, a tall doe in the same colors stood perfectly straight.

She said, “Hello, fawns. Hello, me.”

Creative Mother Deer blinked.

The gate drone scanned the newcomer. Green light.

The newcomer copied her stance, even the little cape-flip.

Clara whispered, “Mom… her cape clasp is on the other side.”

Clarice leaned closer. “And her voice sounds like a recording.”

The Wrong Shoulder

Creative Mother Deer led the look-alike out of the thicket gate and onto a skywalk above Super Forest City.

Below, kiosks blinked and buses hummed. A shoe-repair booth sat beside a fountain that splashed into wide puddles.

The Copy Hero pointed. “Routine civic check. This way.”

Clara padded close, her teal hoodie bouncing. Clarice, in her yellow hoodie, held up her phone like she was filming for fun.

Inside the booth, a human woman with short black hair looked up from a tiny 3D printer that was spitting out a rubbery shoe sole.

“Name’s Mira,” she said. “Who needs help?”

The Copy Hero smiled too fast. “Re-issue my gate override patch.”

Creative Mother Deer’s glowing blue eyes narrowed. “That patch is not for kiosks.”

Mira hesitated, then set a scanner pad on the counter. Green lights danced over Creative Mother Deer’s wrist badge.

“City says you’re cleared,” Mira murmured.

Clara whispered, “Mom, her words don’t match her mouth.”

A sharp siren tone chirped from the Copy Hero’s wrist screen.

“Emergency hero order,” she said, perfectly calm. “Do it.”
