The Day Colors Went Missing

The Quiet Click
CMD Fortress looked like a black puzzle block dropped into Forest Metropolis, its blue windows stacked in neat lines. Two crayon towers and two marker towers rose above the trees.
Crayon Marker Doe bounced on the training deck and swung her giant crayon.
A teal shield flashed out and stopped a foam practice dart.
“Ha! Nice try,” she said.
Her phone buzzed. EMERGENCY CITY ALERT: SCREENS TURNING GRAY.
“Gray? That is rude,” she muttered, tapping the alert again like it might change its mind.
She jogged into the control room.
“Sable, tell me this is a prank.”
Sable Lin’s headset mic wobbled as he leaned toward a monitor.
“Not a prank. Street screens, billboards, even store menus. Cameras caught… specks. Like gnats, near the rooftops.”
“Gnats can’t drain paint,” she said, already grabbing her giant marker.
“Slo—” Sable started.
Crayon Marker Doe shot him a grin.
“Fast first. Details later,” she said, and pushed through the fortress doors into the bright city air
The Wet Corner
Crayon Marker Doe sprinted past a gray billboard that should have been shouting about ice cream.
She skidded into a laundromat. The wash machines still spun, but the price screen over the soap shelf was plain gray.
A smart woman with short hair shoved her phone toward Crayon Marker Doe.
“Look. I filmed it,” she said.
On the video, specks buzzed like gnats. Tiny drones. Each one touched a screen with a needle tip and drank a faint, colorful mist.
Crayon Marker Doe blinked.
“That is not rude,” she said. “That is theft with manners.”
Outside, a puddle by the curb shimmered like spilled paint.
“Name’s Mina,” the woman said. “Owner. The puddles get brighter every minute.”
Crayon Marker Doe twirled her giant marker and snapped a teal blast into a wide shield net.
The net hit a row of metal dryers.
CLANG.
It bounced, burst the front window, and slapped the shimmering puddle—color splashed, and the drones dove down, gulping fast.
Mina grabbed her sleeve.
“Those things just flew toward the SkyRibbon tower!”
