The Castle Before the Quiet
Canvas Polar Metropolis was the kind of city that never stopped making things.
Murals stretched across every wall. Sculptures stood on every corner. The air smelled faintly of paint and fresh ideas — a smell that had been there as long as anyone could remember.
At the very center of it all rose Creative Crayon Castle, blue as a midwinter sky, with tall black towers that scraped the clouds. Inside, Creative Crayon Caribou sat at her studio window, her red cape draped over the back of her chair, her giant blue crayon leaning against the wall beside her.
She was sketching — just for herself, just for fun — when her phone buzzed.
It was a message from her old friend Marble Muskox, a sculptor who lived downtown.
*"Something's wrong,"* the message read. *"I went to work this morning and — I don't know how to explain it. My head is just… empty."*
Crayon stared at the screen.
Empty Pages
Crayon read the message three more times.
*"My head is just… empty."*
She grabbed her cape off the chair, tied it at her shoulder, and called Marble back.
The big muskox — built wide as a doorway, with dark shaggy fur and a stone-dusted apron — picked up on the first ring.
"Marble. Is it only you?"
"No." His voice came out flat. "I called around. Pebble Brush — she can't paint. Ink Horn — nothing. Even the kids at the junior art school. Nobody can come up with anything. Not one idea."
Crayon pushed open the castle window and looked out at the city. Below, a polar bear was standing at a mural wall with a brush in her hand, staring at the blank space like she'd forgotten what paint was for.
Then Crayon's own sketchbook caught her eye.
She reached for it. Picked up her pencil.
And sat there.
Nothing came.
Her pencil tapped the page once, twice — and she put it down.
Whatever was happening out there had just walked right into her castle.
