Crash Landing in the Crystal Caves

The Fortress Before the Quiet
The Super Artist Fortress never slept.
Even at midday, its crystal walls caught the sun and threw it in a hundred directions — thin ribbons of light cutting across the metal floors, the paint-splattered worktables, the towers hung with enormous canvases. The whole building hummed with something between a power station and an art studio.
Super Artist Woman stood at her main worktable, adding the final yellow stripe to a mural she'd been working on for three weeks. She stepped back, tilted her head, and crossed her arms.
"Too much yellow," she muttered.
Below the fortress, Creatopia moved at its usual cheerful pace. Deer-folk in bright scarves argued good-naturedly over market stalls. A pair of goat brothers kicked a ball back and forth across the cobblestones. A sheep woman in a yellow coat waved up at the fortress window without looking.
Super Artist Woman smiled and waved back.
Then the fortress lights flickered.
Static and Strange
The lights flickered again — three short blinks — then stopped.
Super Artist Woman set down her brush and waited. Nothing.
She shrugged and turned back to the mural. Too much yellow, still too much yellow —
Then every screen in the fortress lit up at once.
All twelve monitors, the big display panel above the worktable, even the small one she used for ordering art supplies — all of them blinking with the same jagged white line. A sound came with it. Not an alarm. Something else. Low. Repeating. Like a question asked over and over in a language she didn't know.
She stepped closer to the nearest screen.
The signal wasn't coming from outside Creatopia. It was coming from below it.
She pulled up the fortress sensors and ran a scan. The reading came back fast. The source was deep underground — much deeper than the city's water pipes or the transit tunnels she knew about.
Something down there was sending the same short burst. Again. Again. Again.
Super Artist Woman grabbed her utility belt off the hook by the door.
