Opening Night Sparkles

Oksa smoothed her teal dress and adjusted her silver crown one last time. The Golden Peacock Theater glittered around her like a jeweled palace. Turquoise curtains billowed at the grand entrance, and golden lights twinkled against the evening sky.

"Five minutes until showtime!" called Ms. Rivera, the theater director. She hurried past with her clipboard, checking last-minute details.

Oksa peeked through the backstage curtains at the packed auditorium. Families filled every velvet seat, children bouncing with excitement. Tonight's performance of "The Princess and the Magic Garden" would be her biggest yet.

"Nervous?" asked Tommy, her scene partner, as he straightened his prince costume.

"Not nervous," Oksa said, grinning. "Ready."

The orchestra began tuning their instruments. Oksa took a deep breath and walked toward the stage wings. She loved this moment before a show—when anything felt possible.

Behind her, she didn't notice the side door crack open slightly, or the shadow that slipped inside.

The Unexpected Journey

The lights dimmed and Oksa stepped toward the stage. Her heart beat with excitement, not fear.

"Break a leg, Princess!" Tommy whispered behind her.

Oksa turned to wave at him when strong hands grabbed her shoulders. A cloth bag dropped over her head, blocking out the golden theater lights.

"Hey!" she shouted, but her voice came out muffled. The hands dragged her backward, away from the stage.

She heard Tommy gasp. "Oksa!"

Her boots scraped against the floor as someone pulled her through what sounded like a door. Cool night air hit her arms. A van door slammed shut, and an engine roared to life.

Inside the moving vehicle, Oksa sat on what felt like a wooden crate. The bag still covered her head, but she could hear breathing nearby. Someone else was in here with her.

"Who's there?" she whispered.

A small voice answered. "My name's Cricket. Are you scared?"

"A little," Oksa admitted. "But we'll figure this out together."

The van hit a bump, and both prisoners bounced. Cricket squeaked in surprise.

"Don't worry," Oksa said firmly. "I have a plan."
