Quiet Hours at the Top of Everything

The Thicket of Solitude sat at the very heart of Cervine Metropolis — a tall, gleaming fortress wrapped in living vines and reinforced titanium, surrounded on all sides by the hum and rush of the city below.

Up on the rooftop observation deck, Super Bambi stood at the railing, his red cape pulling gently in the evening wind. His large brown eyes swept across the skyline — curved towers, electric transit rails, and the soft amber glow of a million windows belonging to a million lives.

He loved this hour. The city slowing down just enough to breathe.

"Scanner sweep complete," said DOTTE, the fortress's small AI assistant — her voice cheerful, coming from a round speaker mounted near the door. "All monitored zones are clear, Bambi. Nothing unusual."

"Good," he said, and meant it.

He leaned on the railing, tilted his small antlers toward the sky, and exhaled slowly.

The Frequency of Fifty Years

Everything was calm.

Then DOTTE made a sound she had never made before.

It wasn't an alarm — it was more like a hiccup. A sharp, stuttering beep that cut through the quiet evening air like a fork dropping on a tile floor.

"Bambi." Her round speaker crackled. "Something just interrupted my scanner signal. Not from above. From directly below the city. Deep below."

He turned from the railing. "How deep?"

"Lower than the subway lines. Lower than the water mains." A pause. "I'm picking up a signal pattern. It's — structured. Like a message."

Bambi walked over and tapped the speaker housing. "Play it."

A low, repeating pulse filled the rooftop. Three short bursts. Two long. Three short again. Over and over.

"DOTTE, when did this start?"

"That's the part I can't explain," she said quietly. "My archives show this exact signal appearing in old city records. The first log is dated fifty years ago. It has been transmitting continuously ever since."

Bambi stared at the speaker.
