The Castle That Hums on Quiet Nights
Saturday night at Crayon Phantom Castle was the best night of the week — no question about it.
The dark forest surrounding the castle hummed with life. Through the tall, crooked trees, lights blazed warmly from every window, and laughter floated out across the pine-scented air. The wolves, bears, deer, and foxes who lived in the forest never missed a Saturday night. They came in their houserobes — soft, comfortable, belted things in every color — and they filled the castle halls with music, chatter, and the smell of pine-berry tea.
Doodle Phantom stood near the arched stone doorway, glowing blue eyes scanning the crowd with a grin. His grey cape shifted in the warm indoor breeze.
"You going to stand there all night?" called Rella, a tall wolf with amber eyes, leaning against the banister with a teacup in her paw.
He laughed and stepped inside.
The Wall That Spoke First
Rella, the tall amber-eyed wolf, handed Doodle Phantom a warm cup of pine-berry tea and nodded toward the far wall of the main hall.
"Did you draw that?" she asked.
Doodle Phantom turned. On the stone wall, above the fireplace, was a drawing — a large, rough doodle of a cracked castle with a single eye watching from inside the crack. It wasn't painted. It wasn't carved. It looked exactly like his crayon blast style — the thick waxy lines, the bold outlines — but he hadn't made it.
He crossed the hall slowly. The drawing wasn't there an hour ago. He was certain.
He raised his gloved hand and let a small spark of crayon energy flicker near it. The lines on the wall pulsed once — just once — then went still.
"That's not good," he said quietly.
From the doorway, a small voice cut through the music and chatter.
"I saw who drew it."
Everyone turned. Perched on the iron door handle was a green-and-yellow parrot, tilting his head with one orange eye fixed on Doodle Phantom.
