The Castle at the Edge of the Dark

info-banner

The forest around Crayon Phantom Castle was the kind of dark that felt alive — not dangerous, just deep, like it had secrets it wasn't ready to share yet.

Doodle Phantom landed softly on the castle's stone balcony, his grey cape settling behind him. His glowing blue eyes swept across the treeline below. Somewhere in those thick shadows, firelight flickered between the trees, and faint laughter drifted upward.

Saturday night.

He grinned. The castle had a particular kind of energy on Saturdays — music, the smell of something sweet cooking, and the creatures of the forest coming up the hill in their warm houscoats, ready for the weekly gathering at Crayon Phantom's place.

Doodle Phantom pulled out a small sketchbook from inside his cape and flipped it open. A half-finished doodle stared back at him — something wolf-shaped, something a little too detailed.

He tapped his pen against the page, thinking.

The Page That Wouldn't Stay Still

Doodle Phantom was still staring at the wolf doodle when the sketchbook got warm.

Not warm like a sunny window — warm like something was waking up inside the pages.

"That's new," he said out loud.

The pencil lines of the wolf-shaped drawing started to move. Slowly at first, like the ink was stretching after a long nap. Then faster. The wolf shape peeled itself right off the paper, grew to the size of a real wolf, and hit the stone balcony floor running.

Doodle Phantom lunged for it. "Hey — wait — I didn't finish you!"

The doodle-wolf, completely grey and wobbly-lined like a sketch that forgot to stop, bounded off the balcony railing and dropped straight into the dark forest below.

There was a sharp CRACK from somewhere between the trees.

Then screaming.

Not one voice — several. High and startled, the kind that came when something went very, very wrong very, very fast.

A pair of eyes appeared at the treeline, wide and gold-bright, staring straight up at him.

Then another pair.

Then a third.
