The Quiet Smudge

Fantastic Crayon Doe hovered a few inches above the Dome’s floor, just to dust under the bench without kneeling. Four crayon towers rose overhead—red, yellow, green, and blue—like clean candles in a giant bowl.

Her phone buzzed.

“Skyrail Authority: Maintenance window moved up. Expect delays.”

“Moved up?” she muttered. “On a Tuesday?”

A kid in a lime courier jacket jogged in, panting. He held out a dented tablet case stamped DOME OPS.

“Signature, please,” he said. “I’m Kipp. Also—um—the towers keep doing this.”

Above them, the green tower lights blinked twice, then stayed on. A soft half-click followed, like someone tapping a pen and stopping mid-tap.

Fantastic Crayon Doe looked up, ears tilting. “Did you hear that?”

Kipp nodded. “It does that every minute. My boss said not to worry, but… it feels like a ‘worry’ sound.”

She signed with a fast loop, then hooked the case under one arm.

“Okay,” she said. “Let’s take the skybridge up to the tower walkways and see what’s acting weird before the trains start stacking up—”

Fantastic Crayon Doe and Kipp stepped into a glass elevator tube inside the green tower.

Kipp pressed the UP arrow. “If this thing drops, I’m suing the sky.”

“It is a dome,” she said. “The sky has lawyers.”

The elevator whirred past bolts and clear panels. Halfway up, a window-cleaning platform clung to the tower’s inside curve.

A woman in orange coveralls dragged a blue squeegee across the glass. Clear goggles sat on her forehead, and a silver harness clipped her to a rail.

“Hey!” she called. “If you’re Dome Ops, tell someone the click is getting faster. I can hear it through my earbuds.”

Kipp held up the dented case. “This is all I’ve got.”

The doors opened onto a narrow walkway. Outside the dome’s clear wall, the skyrail line curved like a silver ribbon.

Kipp popped the tablet on. The screen flashed a giant red box: CONTROL PANEL ERROR—AUTO SAFETY IN 58.

A speaker crackled. “Skyrail inbound. Speed high.”

Fantastic Crayon Doe pulled her rainbow-glowing crayon free and snapped a short blast at a side power box.

The tower lights stuttered—then a bright surge raced along the rail line toward the station
