Morning Munchers

Casy stretched her tiny green body in the warm morning sun. The meadow sparkled with dewdrops on every blade of grass. She loved exploring after breakfast, when the world felt fresh and new.

"Good morning, world!" she called cheerfully as she crawled toward a tall daisy.

A soft buzzing sound caught her attention. High above on a rose stem, she spotted something red with black dots. The creature was much smaller than Casy, with a rounded shell that gleamed like a tiny jewel.

"Hello there!" Casy called up to the spotted visitor. "I'm Casy. What's your name?"

The little red creature paused and looked down with bright black eyes. "I'm Rosie," she replied in a musical voice. "I'm very busy today."

Casy's curiosity grew stronger. What could such a tiny bug be so busy doing?

Casy stretched higher to get a better look at Rosie the ladybug. "What kind of work do you do?" she asked.

Rosie crawled closer to a green bug that was sucking juice from the rose stem. "I eat these aphids," she said, opening her mouth wide. "They hurt the plants."

Casy watched in amazement as Rosie quickly gobbled up the tiny green aphid. "You eat bugs?"

"Every day!" Rosie said proudly. "I can eat fifty aphids in just one day. That keeps the roses healthy."

Just then, a sparrow swooped down toward them. Casy froze in fear, but Rosie did something strange. She fell off the stem and landed upside down on a leaf below.

"Rosie! Are you hurt?" Casy called out.

The sparrow flew away. Rosie flipped herself over and climbed back up. "I'm fine! When I'm scared, I pretend to be dead. It tricks the birds."

What we learned: Ladybugs eat aphids that harm plants, and they can eat up to fifty aphids per day. When ladybugs are frightened, they play dead to protect themselves from predators.
