Golden Echoes

Frank kicked a loose stone across the cracked marble floor of the ancient temple. The golden walls of Zerzura stretched around him, covered in hieroglyphs that seemed to dance in the desert sunlight streaming through broken sections of the ceiling.

"This place is incredible," he whispered, running his fingers along the carved symbols. His bright green eyes widened as he noticed something strange—some of the hieroglyphs looked freshly carved, their edges sharp and clean unlike the weathered ancient ones.

A soft humming sound echoed from deeper in the temple. Frank's messy brown hair caught the light as he turned his head, listening carefully. The sound was definitely mechanical, not natural.

"Hello?" he called out, his voice bouncing off the stone walls.

The humming stopped abruptly. Frank felt his heart beat faster. He took a step toward the inner chambers, his red sneakers silent on the smooth floor. Something wasn't right about this supposedly abandoned city.

Unexpected Visitors

Frank crept toward the inner chamber, his red sneakers making tiny scraping sounds on the marble. The mechanical humming had definitely come from this direction.

As he rounded a corner, bright white lights suddenly blazed to life. Frank threw his hands up to shield his eyes, stumbling backward.

"Subject located," a crisp voice announced from hidden speakers.

Frank's heart hammered against his ribs. Modern technology in an ancient city? This wasn't possible. He spun around, looking for an escape route, but metal panels slid down from the ceiling, sealing every doorway with loud clanks.

A woman in a pristine white lab coat stepped out from behind a column. She had short black hair cut in a precise bob and carried a strange silver device that beeped softly. Her dark eyes studied Frank like he was a fascinating bug under a microscope.

"Hello, Frank," she said with a smile that didn't reach her eyes. "We've been waiting for you."

"How do you know my name?" Frank's voice cracked.

The woman pressed a button on her device. A strange mist began filling the chamber.

"Sleep now," she whispered as Frank's vision blurred.
