Skyway Scribble Chase
Listen to audiobook
The Quiet Line
Fantastic Crayon Doe landed on the Skyway Control Deck, inside the dome’s bright glass curve. Four crayon towers stood like giant markers around her—red, yellow, green, and blue—each topped with antennae and blinking lights.
Her phone buzzed.
“Skyway build paused,” the alert said. “Blueprint mismatch.”
A sandy-brown deer-man in an orange safety vest waved her over.
“Wicker Vale,” he said, shaking her gloved hand. “I swear I’m not losing my mind. The plan keeps… re-drawing.”
He tapped a wall screen. A clean white line showed the new skyway path over rooftops.
“Watch,” he said.
The line wriggled like a tiny worm, slid three inches, then snapped into a sharp corner.
Doe leaned in. “Is that a software update?”
Wicker rubbed his eyes. “We updated everything last night. Crews are waiting on the roofs. If that line moves again after we pour, a tower could bend—”
Doe’s rainbow crayon hummed at her side as the screen-line crept toward the edge
The Squeegee Signal
The line on the wall screen slid right off the edge.
It did not vanish.
It flopped onto the control deck floor like a strand of wet paint, then zipped toward a maintenance hatch.
Wicker Vale, the sandy-brown deer-man in the orange vest, blurted, “That is not allowed!”
Fantastic Crayon Doe snatched up her rainbow crayon and ran after it.
“Phone, record,” she said, and her camera started.
Wicker shoved the hatch open, and both of them clambered onto a narrow catwalk outside the dome. Wind pushed at Doe’s mask.
Ahead, the roaming line sprang into the air over the city, sketching a glowing rail that hung above rooftops.
A window cleaner on a buzzing platform rose beside it. She was a human woman with goggles and a lime-green jacket.
“Whoa! New skyway already?” she yelled.
Her long squeegee snagged the line.
The rail kinked hard—toward the nearest crayon tower.
Wicker stabbed at his tablet. “Lock it! Lock it!”
The line split into three fast scribbles and raced away in different directions.
