The Hotel That Hums

info-banner

The Art Gallery Hotel rose above Story Land Metropolis like a chrome-and-glass crown. Its walls held giant paintings lit by internal light. Its lobby smelled like fresh paint and starlight — if starlight had a smell, Paintbrush Mother Cat was pretty sure it would smell like that.

She stood at the front desk, rainbow cape folded neatly over her arm, blue mask pushed up onto her forehead.

"Room 904, please," she said, sliding her card across the marble counter.

The receptionist — a cheerful young fox in a brass-buttoned coat — smiled. "Of course, Ms. Paintbrush. Welcome back."

Her giant magic paintbrush hummed softly against her back like a purring kitten.

She tilted her head. The paintbrush only hummed like that when something nearby didn't belong.

She glanced slowly around the glittering lobby. Guests chatted. A pianist played somewhere upstairs.

Everything looked perfectly normal.

The paintbrush hummed again — louder.

The Hum Behind the Canvas

Paintbrush Mother Cat took the elevator to the ninth floor.

The doors slid open with a soft chime, and the long hallway stretched ahead — cream-colored walls, soft gold lighting, and a row of framed paintings on each side. Normal hotel things.

She found Room 904, tapped in, and dropped her bag on the chair.

Then the paintbrush hummed so hard it rattled against her back.

She spun around.

There — hanging on the wall directly opposite her bed — was a painting she had not noticed when she walked in. It showed a seagull hovering above a churning silver sea. Bright, almost aggressive colors. She stepped closer.

The seagull in the painting moved.

Not in a swooping, dramatic way. Just a small tilt of its head. Like it was looking at her.

She pressed her finger against the canvas. It rippled — like touching still water.

Her hand went through.

Cold. Complete silence on the other side.

She yanked her hand back. Her fingers were bone dry. And the painting had gone completely still again, nothing but colors and brushstrokes.
