Swimming Lessons for a Deer

Colors Beneath the Surface
Darlene pressed her hooves against the rocky edge of Crayon Mermaid Cove. The water sparkled turquoise in the afternoon sun, but it might as well have been an ocean for all the good it did her.
"I wish I could swim," she whispered to herself, watching the gentle waves lap against the shore.
A splash caught her attention. Blue hair broke the surface, followed by shimmering light blue skin and the most beautiful face Darlene had ever seen.
"The Crayon Mermaid," Darlene breathed.
The mermaid's vibrant blue tail flicked playfully as she surfaced completely. Her bright eyes held an artistic sparkle that made Darlene's heart flutter. In her hand, she held what looked like a coral-styled crayon wand.
"Hello there," the Crayon Mermaid called out, her voice like tinkling wind chimes. "You look sad."
Darlene's cheeks flushed pink. "I just... I can't swim."
The mermaid tilted her head thoughtfully. "Everyone should experience the joy of water."
The Underwater Knight
The Crayon Mermaid's tail shifted from blue to silver as she studied Darlene. "I could teach you to swim," she said, her voice carrying a musical quality.
Darlene's heart skipped. "Really? You would do that?"
"Of course! But first, let me show you something amazing." The mermaid raised her coral-styled crayon wand above the water.
A strange metallic glint caught their attention from the depths below. Something large and dark moved beneath the surface.
"What is that?" Darlene asked, stepping back from the water's edge.
The Crayon Mermaid frowned, her artistic sparkle dimming. "I don't know. Something's down there that wasn't there before."
The water began to bubble violently. A massive figure in medieval knight armor burst through the surface with a tremendous splash, water cascading off the ancient metal plates. The knight's helmet gleamed wetly in the sunlight.
"Nobody swims in my domain!" the armored figure boomed, pointing a gauntleted finger at them both.
