Morning in Sunnyata

Danny stepped out of his tiny house as the morning sun painted Sunnyata Village golden. His stomach rumbled, but he smiled anyway. Today felt different somehow.

"There goes Danny the dreamer!" Marcus called from across the dusty street. Three older boys surrounded the smaller kid, blocking his path to the village well.

"Still wearing those same torn clothes?" laughed Ben, pointing at Danny's faded blue hoodie. "My dog has better outfits."

Danny's backpack felt heavier as he adjusted the straps. His warm brown eyes stayed calm despite the teasing. "Good morning, Marcus. Good morning, Ben."

"Don't 'good morning' us," sneered Jake, the tallest of the three. "Hand over whatever coins you've got today."

"I don't have any money," Danny said quietly, his messy dark-brown hair catching the breeze.

The bullies exchanged glances. Something about Danny's gentle smile never seemed to break, no matter what they said. It frustrated them more than anger would have.

"Whatever," Marcus muttered. "Come on, guys."

Danny watched them walk away, then continued toward the well, his scuffed sneakers kicking up small clouds of dust.

The Stranger's Offer

Danny reached the village well and filled his small water bottle. The morning sun climbed higher, making the dusty ground warm under his sneakers.

"Excuse me, young man."

Danny turned to see a tall stranger in a crisp black suit. The man's silver watch gleamed in the sunlight. His shiny leather shoes looked expensive, nothing like anything Danny had ever seen in Sunnyata Village.

"You look like you could use some help," the man said, pulling out a thick wallet. "How about I give you a hundred dollars? No strings attached."

Danny's eyes widened. A hundred dollars could buy food for weeks. His stomach rumbled again, reminding him he hadn't eaten since yesterday.

"That's very kind of you, sir," Danny said softly, "but I can't take your money."

The stranger raised his eyebrows. "Are you sure? I noticed those boys giving you trouble earlier. This could change things for you."

Danny shook his head, his gentle smile never fading. "Thank you, but no."

The man studied Danny's face for a long moment, then tucked his wallet away. "Interesting," he murmured before walking toward the village center.
