The Quiet Click

Creative Deer Lodge looked like a sleek black pebble dropped in the middle of Super Forest City, with blue windows shining like screens.

Inside, Creative Doe sat at her workbench, tapping a coin-sized button. It was bright blue, with a tiny arrow and a little speaker hole.

Her phone lay beside it, open to an app named POWER PEEK.

“Okay,” she said, brushing her light-blue cape off her chair. “Read me. Just me.”

A knock came from the open doorway.

“Still inventing at breakfast?” Tinker Goat asked.

He stepped in, glasses sliding down his nose, and pointed at the button.

“That thing using wireless?” he said. “Some gadgets auto-join the city net. One wrong setting and… whoosh.”

Creative Doe snorted. “It is a button, not a rocket.”

She stuck it onto her suit’s chest panel and pressed.

The button chirped.

Outside, a distant car alarm blipped.

On her phone, POWER PEEK changed to: SEARCHING… CITYWIDE

Creative Doe’s phone buzzed hard against the workbench.

On the screen, POWER PEEK flashed: MATCH FOUND: DELIVERY ROUTE.

Tinker Goat, the white-and-tan goat in square glasses, leaned in.

“Your button didn’t just join the city net,” he said. “It hopped on mail tracking.”

Creative Doe slapped her helmet on and sprinted out of Creative Deer Lodge with him close behind.

At the curb, a mail truck rolled past the shiny black street. A blue dot on her phone raced along with it.

“Stop!” Creative Doe called.

A sheep baker in a pink chef hat hurried from a mailbox cluster, balancing pastry boxes. The boxes wiggled, then lifted off her arms like balloons.

“Hey! My buns!” she yelped.

A human kid jogger came around the corner, feet thumping. His next step bounced him straight up, higher than the truck’s roof.

He flailed. “I did not train for moon-jumps!”

Creative Doe fired a careful blue blast. A small package smacked to the truck’s side, taped in place.

The button chirped from inside the box.
