The Canvas Competition Crisis
Listen to audiobook
Morning at the Base
Chris stretched his arms as morning sunlight streamed through the transparent dome of Crayon Base. The four colorful towers around him gleamed like giant art supplies reaching toward the sky. He pulled on his blue and black supersuit, adjusting the mask over his bright blue eyes.
"Another beautiful day in Canvas Metropolis," he said, stepping onto the balcony. Below, the city buzzed with activity. Humanoid deer hurried to work alongside humans, while goat-people chatted at street corners. A pair of women walked hand-in-hand past a coffee shop, laughing together.
Chris summoned his giant blue crayon, feeling its familiar weight in his hand. He was about to take flight when his phone buzzed. A message from Mayor Brushwell appeared on the screen: "Emergency meeting at City Hall. Art contest announcement today!"
Chris raised an eyebrow. An art contest? That sounded fun, not like an emergency. Still, the mayor rarely called unless something important was happening. He launched himself into the air, blue cape flowing behind him as he soared toward the heart of the city.
The Ruined Masterpieces
Chris landed on the marble steps of City Hall just as Mayor Brushwell burst through the front doors. The mayor was a tall woman with curly red hair and worried green eyes, wearing a paint-splattered apron over her business suit.
"Chris! Thank goodness you're here," she said, waving a crumpled letter. "We've got a serious problem with the Canvas Competition."
"What kind of problem?" Chris asked, following her inside.
Mayor Brushwell led him past the busy lobby where a humanoid deer secretary typed frantically at her computer. They entered the mayor's office, where colorful paintings covered every wall.
"Look at this," the mayor said, spreading photos across her desk. Each picture showed a ruined art piece—paintings with holes slashed through them, sculptures broken into pieces, and drawings covered in black paint.
Chris picked up one photo showing a beautiful landscape painting that had been completely destroyed. "When did this happen?"
"Last night. Someone broke into the community center and destroyed twelve contest entries." The mayor's voice shook. "The competition starts tomorrow, and half our artists are too scared to participate now."
Chris felt his jaw tighten. Someone was trying to ruin Canvas Metropolis's biggest art celebration.
