The Canvas That Ate Colors
Listen to audiobook
Morning Sunbeams
Ms. Crayon Lynx stretched her arms as golden sunlight poured through the crayon-stick windows of her mansion. The waxy walls sparkled in blues, reds, and yellows around her cozy bedroom.
"Good morning, beautiful city!" she called out, stepping onto her balcony.
Canvas Wild City spread below her like a giant art project. Colorful houses dotted the streets where humans walked alongside furry lynxes, woolly sheep, and sleek cats. Market stalls displayed rainbow fruits and painted pottery.
Clara poked her head out from the kitchen. "Breakfast is ready! Pancakes shaped like paintbrushes."
"Coming!" Ms. Crayon Lynx bounded down the crayon stairs, her blue-and-black supersuit gleaming.
As she sat down to eat, something caught her eye through the window. A strange gray patch seemed to be creeping across the fountain in the town square.
"That's odd," she murmured, squinting at the colorless spot.
The Spreading Silence
Ms. Crayon Lynx dropped her fork with a clatter. The gray patch wasn't just sitting there anymore—it was growing. Fast.
"Clara!" she called. "Come look at this!"
Clara, a human woman with short brown hair and bright green eyes, hurried over. She wore a yellow apron over her blue jeans and white t-shirt. "What's wrong?"
"The fountain. Something's draining all the color from it."
They both pressed their faces to the window. The gray creep had already swallowed half the fountain and was moving toward the flower beds.
"That's impossible," Clara whispered.
Ms. Crayon Lynx grabbed her giant crayon from the wall hook. "Not impossible. Just very, very bad." She bounded toward the door. "I need to get down there before it spreads further."
"Wait!" Clara grabbed her arm. "What if it's dangerous?"
"Then people need help." Ms. Crayon Lynx's ears twitched with determination. "Besides, I'm a superhero. Dangerous is my specialty."
She burst through the front door and leaped into the air, her powerful legs launching her toward the town square. Below, a small sparrow landed near the gray zone and immediately lost all its beautiful colors, turning completely gray.
