The Canvas That Wouldn't Color
Listen to audiobook
Morning Signals
Chris floated above Canvas Metropolis, his blue cape rippling in the morning breeze. The city sparkled below him like a giant artist's palette—rainbow buildings stretched toward the horizon, and colorful creatures wandered the streets. A humanoid deer with purple spots waved from her balcony. Chris waved back with his giant blue crayon.
"Another beautiful day in the most creative city in the world," he said to himself, landing gracefully on Crayon Base's main tower.
Inside the dome, his computer screen blinked with urgent messages from Mayor Brushwell. Chris pressed the communication button.
"Crayon Chris! Thank goodness you're here," the mayor's voice crackled through the speaker. "We have reports of strange incidents happening across the city. People are calling about their art supplies acting weird."
Chris raised an eyebrow. "Weird how?"
"Paint won't stick to canvases. Colored pencils are breaking for no reason. And Mrs. Woolsworth said her knitting needles keep slipping."
Chris grabbed his cape. Something wasn't right in Canvas Metropolis.
The Colorless Corner
Chris soared through the morning sky toward downtown Canvas Metropolis. Below him, the Artistic District buzzed with its usual creative energy. He spotted the problem immediately.
A massive white patch spread across Palette Plaza like spilled milk. Where vibrant murals once decorated building walls, only blank whiteness remained. The colorful market stalls had turned ghostly pale.
"What in the world?" Chris muttered, landing near a small elderly woman with silver hair tied in a neat bun. She wore a paint-splattered apron and held a brush that dripped clear liquid instead of paint.
"Young man, are you seeing this too?" she asked, her green eyes wide with worry. "I'm Rosa Martinez, and I've been painting these walls for thirty years. My paints just... disappeared!"
Chris tried summoning his giant blue crayon. It flickered weakly in his hand, then vanished completely.
"That's impossible," he whispered.
Rosa pointed across the plaza. "It started there, by the old fountain. The whiteness is spreading like it's alive."
Chris felt his super strength drain away. His flight power sputtered out, forcing him to stumble forward on foot. Something was stealing their creative abilities.
