The Sound Under the Buckle

Ms Scribble Sheep paced the landing rail of Scribble Sheep Fortress, where marker towers and pencil towers poked the morning sky like giant art tools.

Her phone buzzed. “Sky-lane slowdown: Level Yellow,” read the city alert.

“Of course,” she muttered, adjusting her silver mask. Her silver cape slid cool over her back, and something near the shoulder buckle made a tiny click-click.

Riff—the tan goat in the green utility jacket—rolled up a service ramp in his little toolbox cart, panting. “You left without me!”

“I did not plan the talking fabric!” she snapped, grabbing the shoulder buckle.

Click-click. Clack.

The cape popped free and lifted itself, smug as a balloon. It drifted straight toward the traffic jam.

A small brown dog in a red harness sprinted from a mail door, barking and tugging at a loose strap.

“Cape! Get back here!” Ms Scribble Sheep lunged—
