Morning Manes and Wild Plans
Jackie woke up and her black hair stuck out in seventeen different directions. She grabbed her shark tooth necklace from the nightstand and clipped on her skull earrings. Her red and black striped shirt was wrinkled but perfect.
"Jackie! Breakfast!" her mum called from downstairs.
She stumbled to the kitchen where her best mates Ollie, Remi, Mike, Jacob, and Carson were already munching toast. Their hair looked like they'd stuck their fingers in electrical sockets.
"G'day, you bunch of wild monkeys," Jackie grinned, showing her missing left tooth.
"Don't say that word," Ollie whispered, glancing around nervously. "What if the hairdressers hear you?"
"What word? Monkeys?" Carson laughed. "We do look pretty crazy."
Ollie shuddered. "Shh! They might be listening!"
Jackie rolled her eyes. "You're mental, Ollie. They can't hear us from here."
But through the window, she spotted three women with scissors walking down the street, eyeing every messy-haired kid they passed.
The Pink Apron Invasion
"Right," Jackie said, stuffing toast in her mouth. "Let's get to school before—"
The front door burst open. Three women marched in wearing bright pink aprons covered in tiny scissors. Their hair was perfectly styled, not a strand out of place.
"Good morning, children!" the tallest one chirped. She had curly blonde hair and carried a massive pink toolbox. "I'm Miss Sparkle, and these are my assistants, Miss Glitter and Miss Shine!"
Ollie dropped his toast. His face went white as paper.
"We're from Harristown's Mobile Hair Emergency Squad," Miss Sparkle announced. "Someone reported a Code Red Monkey Hair situation at this address!"
"Run!" Carson whispered.
But Miss Glitter, a short woman with red hair in tight ringlets, blocked the back door. Miss Shine, who had silver hair in a perfect bun, guarded the kitchen window.
"Now, now," Miss Sparkle said sweetly, pulling electric clippers from her toolbox. The buzzing sound filled the room. "This won't hurt a bit!"
"Those devils!" Jackie gasped, backing against the wall with her friends. "If those things get near my head, I'm gonna die from the baldness!"
The clippers buzzed louder.
