The Morning Routine
Ursa Marker stood at her bedroom window, looking out over the sprawling city of Artlantis. The morning sun painted the buildings in warm golden hues, and she could see citizens already bustling about their day. Humans walked alongside cat-people and dog-folk, all heading to work or school.
"Another beautiful day to protect the city," she said, adjusting her silver mask in the mirror.
Her giant magic marker sat on its special stand beside her bed, glowing softly with blue light. She picked it up, feeling its familiar weight in her paw. The marker had been her trusted companion for three years now, ever since she'd discovered her powers.
Ursa practiced a few gentle strokes in the air, watching as faint blue lines appeared and faded. Perfect control, as always.
She clipped the marker to her utility belt and stepped out onto her balcony. Marker Tower stretched high above the city center, giving her the perfect view of everything below.
"Time to start patrol," she announced to no one in particular.
The First Purple Puddle
Ursa leaped from the balcony and soared through the morning air, her silver cape streaming behind her. The city looked peaceful below, with shopkeepers opening their stores and school children walking to class.
She landed softly in the main plaza near a small fountain where a sparrow-woman sat feeding breadcrumbs to pigeons. The woman looked up with bright yellow eyes and smiled.
"Good morning, Ursa! Another quiet day ahead, I hope."
"That's the plan, Mrs. Chirp," Ursa replied, unclipping her magic marker. She decided to practice a few colorful designs to brighten the fountain area.
She drew a gentle arc in the air, expecting her usual blue line to appear. Instead, a vivid purple streak blazed across the sky and splashed down into the fountain water.
Mrs. Chirp squawked in surprise as the entire fountain turned bright purple, bubbling and fizzing. The purple water spilled over the edges, forming growing puddles that crept across the plaza stones.
"That's... not supposed to happen," Ursa muttered, staring at her marker in confusion.
She tried again, drawing a small circle. Another purple blast shot out, this time hitting a nearby lamppost and turning it completely purple.
