The Color Crisis
Listen to audiobook
Morning Patrol
Ms. Paintbrush Cat soared through the morning sky above Cat Deer City, her rainbow cape streaming behind her. She landed gracefully on the observation deck of Paintbrush Tower, her home made entirely of giant, colorful paintbrushes that stretched high into the clouds.
"Another beautiful day to protect the city," she said, adjusting her purple mask. Her golden eyes sparkled as she gazed down at the bustling streets below, where humanoid cats, deer, and humans went about their morning routines.
She pulled out her phone to check the news. The headlines seemed ordinary enough—traffic updates, weather forecasts, local events. Nothing requiring superhero intervention.
Her giant magic paintbrush materialized in her hand, glowing softly with rainbow light. She was about to practice some new flying maneuvers when something caught her eye. A small gray patch appeared on one of the tower's bright blue paintbrush bristles.
"That's odd," she murmured, touching the spot. The gray area felt cold and lifeless under her fingertips. She'd never seen anything like it before.
The Gray Spread
Ms. Paintbrush Cat studied the gray patch more closely. It seemed to be growing, creeping across the blue bristles like spilled paint in reverse.
"This can't be good," she muttered, pulling out her phone to call the Color Control Center downtown.
The phone rang once before a panicked voice answered. "Ms. Paintbrush Cat! Thank goodness you called. We have a major emergency!"
"What kind of emergency?" she asked, though she had a sinking feeling she already knew.
"Colors are disappearing all over the city! It started about ten minutes ago. The red roses in Central Park turned gray first, then it spread to the yellow taxi cabs, the green traffic lights—everything!"
Ms. Paintbrush Cat's golden eyes widened. She looked down at the street and gasped. Half the buildings below had lost their colors completely. A group of humanoid deer were pointing at their gray fur patches in confusion.
"I'll be right there," she said, tucking her phone away.
Her magic paintbrush glowed brighter as she gripped it tightly. Whatever was causing this color crisis, she had to stop it before the entire city turned completely gray.
