The Color Drain Crisis
Listen to audiobook
Morning at the Towers
Paintbrush Mother Goat stepped out onto the wooden deck of Paintbrush Lodge, her blue and black paint-splattered dress catching the morning breeze. The four paintbrush towers stretched high above her home, their tips gleaming silver against the sky.
"Mama! Mama!" Seven little voices called from inside the lodge.
She turned as her seven kid goats tumbled through the doorway. Rosie, the eldest daughter, carried her own small purple paintbrush. Behind her came Jasper and Oliver, the twin boys, followed by Daisy, Luna, Sage, and tiny Pearl.
"We want to paint the meadow flowers today!" Rosie announced, bouncing on her hooves.
Mother Goat smiled and summoned her giant blue glowing paintbrush. It materialized in her hands with a soft shimmer. "What a wonderful idea. But first, look around. Do you notice anything strange about our beautiful land today?"
The kids gazed across Canvas Fairy Tale Land. Something felt different, though none could quite say what.
The Silent Rainbow
The seven kid goats scattered across the meadow, each holding their small paintbrushes high. Rosie dipped her purple brush into the air and swept it across a patch of daisies.
"Nothing happened!" she called out, her voice puzzled.
Mother Goat watched as Jasper and Oliver tried painting the same flower. Their brushes moved through the motions, but no color appeared. The white petals remained stubbornly white.
"Mama, our paint isn't working," Daisy said, shaking her tiny blue brush.
Luna pointed toward the distant hills. "Look! The red barn is turning gray!"
Mother Goat squinted across Canvas Fairy Tale Land. The bright red roof of Farmer Pete's barn was indeed fading to a dull gray, like someone had drained it with an invisible sponge.
"And the yellow sunflowers too," Pearl whispered.
A small cricket hopped onto Mother Goat's hoof. Unlike other crickets, this one wore a tiny mail carrier's hat and carried a miniature satchel.
"Emergency delivery!" the cricket chirped. "The Color Council needs you immediately! All paint magic is failing across the land!"
Mother Goat's blue paintbrush flickered weakly in her hands.
