Morning Rounds

Captain Paintbrush stood on the highest tower of Paintbrush Fortress, watching Canvas Metropolis wake up below. The morning sun painted golden streaks across the glass buildings where humanoid animals and humans hurried to work.

"Another beautiful day to protect the city," he said, adjusting his red sunglass goggles.

His giant blue paintbrush hummed softly in his hand, its magical glow steady and bright. He loved these peaceful moments before the day's adventures began.

A cheerful bark echoed from the street below. Mrs. Woolsworth, a fluffy white sheep who ran the corner bakery, waved at him with her hoof.

"Good morning, Captain!" she called out.

He waved back, grinning. The city felt perfect today—colorful, alive, full of joy.

But as he prepared to fly down for his morning patrol, something caught his eye. In the distance, near the market square, a small patch of color seemed... different. Duller somehow.

Captain Paintbrush squinted through his goggles, trying to get a better look.

The Gray Storm

Captain Paintbrush flew down from his tower, his blue paintbrush glowing as he soared toward the market square. The dull patch he'd spotted from above looked much worse up close.

"Oh no," he whispered.

Three humanoid sparrows sat on a bench, their bright yellow feathers now completely gray. They stared at their wings with confused, sad expressions.

"Chirp used to be such a beautiful golden color," one sparrow said to her friend. "Now I can't remember what yellow even looked like."

Captain Paintbrush landed nearby, his red goggles reflecting the morning sun. He raised his magic paintbrush, concentrating hard. Blue paint swirled from the brush tip, but when it touched the sparrow's wing, the color immediately drained away like water through a sieve.

"That's impossible," he muttered.

Suddenly, a sharp crack echoed across the sky. Captain Paintbrush looked up to see something that made his heart skip a beat. High above Canvas Metropolis, a massive gray storm cloud was forming, but this wasn't any ordinary cloud. It was sucking colors right out of the air itself, growing bigger and darker by the second.

The sparrows' feathers turned an even deeper shade of gray.
