Morning Patrol Blues

Ms. Paintbrush Axolotl stretched her arms wide as the morning sun painted golden streaks across Canvas Zoo City. She stood on the highest balcony of Paintbrush Axolotl Tower, her rainbow cape fluttering in the gentle breeze. The city sparkled below like a box of crayons come to life.

"Another beautiful day to keep the city safe," she said, adjusting her blue mask. Her frilly gill-feathers twitched with excitement as she prepared for her morning patrol.

She leaped from the tower, soaring gracefully between the colorful buildings. Humans and animal citizens waved from windows and sidewalks. A zebra family crossed the street below while a group of children played in Rainbow Park.

Everything seemed perfect until she noticed something odd. The bright red fire hydrant on Maple Street looked... duller than usual. She blinked her big bright eyes and looked again.

"That's strange," she murmured, hovering mid-air. "Maybe I need more sleep."

The Fading Rainbow

Ms. Paintbrush Axolotl flew closer to the fire hydrant, her frilly gill-feathers twitching with concern. The bright red paint had definitely faded to a dull pink.

"That's not normal," she said, landing softly on the sidewalk. She touched the metal surface with her gloved hand. The paint felt rough and flaky.

A sharp whistle echoed from Rainbow Park. She spun around to see a hummingbird hovering frantically near the playground.

"Help! Help!" the tiny bird chirped in a high voice. "The colors are disappearing!"

Ms. Paintbrush Axolotl soared toward the park. Her big bright eyes widened in shock. The bright yellow slide had turned pale cream. The green grass looked gray-brown. Children sat on colorless swings, looking confused and sad.

"What happened here?" she asked the hummingbird, who introduced himself as Zippy.

"A strange machine came through about an hour ago," Zippy explained, his tiny wings beating rapidly. "It made a horrible sucking sound and all the colors just... vanished!"

Ms. Paintbrush Axolotl felt her stomach drop. Someone was stealing the colors from Canvas Zoo City. This was bigger than she thought.
