The Color Thief Crisis
Listen to audiobook
Morning Patrol
Ms. Crayon Zebra stood atop her fortress, watching the sun rise over Craft Room City. Her blue mask caught the morning light as she scanned the streets below. The city hummed with activity - humanoid zebras hurried to work while human couples strolled hand in hand toward the art districts.
"Another peaceful morning," she said, adjusting her utility belt filled with colorful crayons.
A soft beeping echoed from inside the fortress. She flew down through the central tower's window, landing gracefully in her control room. Multiple screens showed different areas of the city, all displaying normal activity.
The beeping came from her communication panel. A red light blinked steadily.
"Odd," she muttered, pressing the flashing button.
Static filled the speakers, then cleared to reveal a panicked voice: "Help! Something's wrong at the Rainbow Gallery! The colors... they're disappearing!"
Ms. Crayon Zebra's blue eyes widened. She had never heard of colors vanishing before.
The Gray Machines
Ms. Crayon Zebra burst through the fortress doors and soared across the city skyline. The Rainbow Gallery sat in the arts district, its normally vibrant exterior now a dull gray. She landed outside with a soft thud.
A humanoid zebra in a paint-splattered apron rushed toward her. "Ms. Crayon Zebra! Thank goodness you're here!"
"What happened?" she asked, studying the colorless building.
"I'm Pablo, the gallery owner. This morning, everything was normal. Then these strange machines appeared—" He pointed to three metal boxes humming loudly on the sidewalk. Each one had tubes extending toward the gallery walls. "They just started draining the colors away!"
Ms. Crayon Zebra examined the nearest machine. It looked like an oversized mail box with spinning wheels inside. Through a small window, she could see swirling colors being pulled through the tubes.
"Where did they come from?" she asked.
Pablo shook his head. "They appeared overnight. No one saw who put them here."
A mechanical whirring sound grew louder. The humanoid zebra stepped closer to Ms. Crayon Zebra as more gray spread across nearby buildings.
