The Color Thief's Challenge
Listen to audiobook
Morning at the Base
Ms. Crayon Rhino stretched her powerful arms inside her blue and black supersuit as the morning sun poured through the curved windows of her base. The walls gleamed with bands of silver metal wrapped around enormous crayons that reached from floor to ceiling.
She picked up her giant magic crayon, watching its tip shift from deep purple to bright yellow. The color change always made her smile.
"Another peaceful day in Canvas Savannah Metropolis," she said, gazing out at the bustling city below. Humans and animal citizens hurried along colorful sidewalks painted in rainbow stripes.
Her communication device buzzed. Chief Marker's voice crackled through the speaker.
"Ms. Crayon Rhino, we need you downtown. Something strange is happening to the colors near the art district."
She frowned, studying her crayon. The yellow tip flickered, then went completely gray.
"On my way, Chief."
The superhero launched herself through the base's exit tunnel, her cape streaming behind her as she flew toward whatever awaited.
The Gray District
Ms. Crayon Rhino swooped down toward the art district, her cape flapping behind her. Below, the rainbow-striped sidewalks had turned completely gray. Shop windows that once displayed bright paintings now showed only black and white sketches.
She landed beside a woman with short brown hair who was kneeling next to a puddle. The woman wore paint-splattered overalls and held a brush that dripped colorless liquid.
"I'm Maya, the district's head artist," the woman said, looking up with worried green eyes. "Everything lost its color about an hour ago. My paintbrush won't make anything but gray marks."
Ms. Crayon Rhino pulled out her magic crayon. The tip, usually bright and vibrant, remained stubbornly gray.
"Even my crayon's affected," she said, frowning.
A small hummingbird zipped past them, its feathers completely gray instead of their usual emerald green. It hovered near Maya's shoulder, chirping frantically.
"That's Zippy," Maya explained. "He's trying to tell us something."
The bird darted toward a tall building at the district's center, then back to them, repeating the pattern urgently.
"He wants us to follow him," Ms. Crayon Rhino realized.
