Morning Shadows

Buck adjusted his black sunglass goggles and stepped out onto the balcony of his Crayon Creative Thicket fortress. The morning sun painted Art Super City in brilliant hues below him. Rainbow-colored buildings stretched to the horizon, where humanoid deer and humans bustled along streets lined with flowering trees.

His giant blue crayon hummed softly in his grip as he scanned the city. Something felt different today, though he couldn't place what.

"Morning report, Buck!" called Iris, a young deer with cream-colored fur, bounding up the spiral staircase. She wore a bright yellow vest and carried a tablet. "The Art District Council wants to discuss the new mural project."

Buck nodded, but his attention drifted to the eastern district. A faint gray patch seemed to flicker near the Palette Plaza, like a shadow passing over the buildings.

"Did you see that?" he asked, pointing.

Iris squinted. "See what?"

The gray patch vanished, leaving only the usual vibrant cityscape. Buck frowned. His power-sensing abilities rarely gave false alarms.

The Flickering Warning

Buck's crayon hummed louder as he descended into the city streets. The gray patch had vanished, but his power-sensing abilities still tingled with warning.

"Let's check the Palette Plaza," he told Iris, who trotted beside him on her short legs.

They rounded the corner near the Melody Market, where a young sparrow with brown feathers perched on a colorful fruit cart. The bird chirped frantically, flapping her tiny wings.

"The colors are disappearing!" she squeaked. "First my nest turned gray, then the apple tree!"

Buck looked where she pointed. Half the apple tree stood completely gray - no green leaves, no red apples, just dull charcoal shadows. The other half blazed with normal autumn colors.

"When did this start?" Buck asked.

"Just now! It's spreading!" The sparrow's voice cracked with panic.

As they watched, the gray crept like spilled paint across another branch. A nearby flower bed began losing its yellow petals, turning ash-colored.

Iris gasped. "Buck, look at your crayon!"

His giant blue crayon flickered, its bright color dimming for a moment before returning to normal.
