Morning Patrol Blues
Ms. Paintbrush Caribou stepped onto the highest balcony of her fortress, adjusting her blue mask as the morning sun painted Art Zoo Metropolis in brilliant hues below. The rainbow cape fluttered behind her as she gazed across the sprawling city filled with colorful buildings and bustling streets.
"Another beautiful day to protect the city," she said, stretching her arms above her small antlers.
Her phone buzzed. The caller ID showed Mayor Zebra's office.
"Ms. Paintbrush, we need you downtown immediately," came the urgent voice. "Something very strange is happening on Palette Street."
She frowned. "What kind of strange?"
"The buildings... they're losing their color. The red brick apartments are turning gray, and the yellow taxi cabs look like old black and white photographs."
Ms. Paintbrush's dark eyes widened. She'd never heard of anything like this before. "I'll be right there."
She leaped from the balcony, her cape streaming behind her as she soared toward the mysterious problem.
The Sparrow's Warning
Ms. Paintbrush Caribou touched down on Palette Street and gasped. The red brick buildings stood like gray ghosts against the morning sky. Yellow taxi cabs had faded to dull silver, their cheerful color completely drained away.
"This is worse than I thought," she whispered.
A tiny sparrow with bright brown feathers landed on her rainbow cape. The small bird chirped frantically, hopping up and down.
"What's wrong, little friend?" Ms. Paintbrush asked.
The sparrow flew in circles around her head, then darted toward the park. She followed, using her super speed to keep up with the agitated bird.
In Rainbow Park, she stopped short. The famous flower gardens that usually bloomed in every color imaginable were completely gray. Even the grass had lost its green.
"The whole park," she breathed.
Suddenly, her phone buzzed with an emergency alert. The message made her antlers tingle with worry: "COLOR LOSS SPREADING CITYWIDE. ALL SUPERHEROES REPORT IMMEDIATELY."
The sparrow perched on her shoulder and chirped one sharp note, then pointed its tiny wing toward the shadowy edge of the park where something glinted in the bushes.
