Morning Shadows

Ms. Paintbrush Caribou soared through the morning sky above Art Zoo Metropolis, her rainbow cape streaming behind her. The city sparkled below with vibrant murals covering every building wall. She landed gracefully on the highest tower of her fortress.

"Another beautiful day to protect our colorful city," she said, adjusting her blue mask.

Her assistant, Otto the orangutan, swung up beside her holding a steaming cup of coffee. His orange fur gleamed in the sunlight, and his brown eyes looked worried.

"Ms. Paintbrush, something strange happened overnight," Otto said, pointing toward the east side of the city. "The Jenkins family called. They said their garden lost all its color."

She squinted with her X-ray vision toward the distant neighborhood. Sure enough, one small patch of the city appeared completely gray.

"Probably just a water main break washing out the paint," she said confidently. "We'll check it out after breakfast."

Otto frowned but said nothing more.

The Silver Visitor

After a quick breakfast of blueberry pancakes, Ms. Paintbrush Caribou flew toward the Jenkins neighborhood with Otto clinging to her cape. The orangutan's worried expression hadn't changed since morning.

"There it is," Otto pointed below.

She gasped. The gray patch had tripled in size overnight. Three entire blocks looked like an old black-and-white photograph. Trees, houses, even the fire hydrants had lost every trace of color.

They landed beside Mrs. Jenkins, who was tending her completely gray roses. The elderly woman with silver hair and worried blue eyes wore a faded floral dress that should have been bright pink.

"It happened so fast," Mrs. Jenkins said, her voice shaking. "Yesterday my garden was beautiful. This morning, everything just... drained away."

Ms. Paintbrush knelt and touched a colorless tulip. It felt normal, but looked eerily wrong.

"Have you noticed anything unusual? Strange sounds or visitors?" she asked.

"Well, there was that hummingbird," Mrs. Jenkins said. "A peculiar silver one that kept hovering near my roses yesterday evening. I'd never seen anything like it before."

Otto's brown eyes widened with alarm.
