The Color Thief's Challenge
Listen to audiobook
Morning Patrol
Paintbrush Buck stretched his arms high above his head as the morning sun painted golden streaks across Canvas Forest City. From his perch atop the Paintbrush Thicket, he could see the entire city spread below him like a colorful map.
"Another beautiful day to keep the city safe," he said to himself, adjusting his blue mask. His giant paintbrush gleamed in the sunlight, ready for action.
Buck leaped from the fortress and soared over the bustling streets. Humans and deer-folk waved from below as his shadow passed overhead. The market square buzzed with vendors setting up their colorful stalls, and children played in the parks.
Everything looked perfect. Too perfect.
Buck landed softly near the fountain in Central Square. Something felt different today, though he couldn't put his finger on it. The colors seemed just a tiny bit duller than usual. The flower beds that normally burst with brilliant reds and yellows looked somehow... muted.
"Probably just the morning light," Buck muttered, but his super senses tingled with unease.
The Fading Garden
Buck decided to investigate the strange color changes more closely. He flew to Rainbow Avenue, where Mrs. Featherworth ran the city's most famous flower shop.
"Good morning, Mrs. Featherworth!" Buck called as he landed outside her shop.
Mrs. Featherworth, a middle-aged human woman with graying hair pulled back in a neat bun, looked up from watering her plants. Her green eyes seemed worried as she adjusted her floral apron.
"Oh, Paintbrush Buck! Thank goodness you're here," she said, setting down her watering can. "Something terrible is happening to my flowers. Look!"
Buck examined the flower beds closely. The roses that should have been deep crimson were now pale pink. The sunflowers looked more like butter than sunshine.
"It started this morning," Mrs. Featherworth explained. "Every hour, they get a little more faded. And it's not just my flowers - I heard from other shopkeepers that their colorful displays are dulling too."
Buck's super senses tingled with alarm. This wasn't natural. Someone or something was deliberately draining the color from Canvas Forest City.
"Don't worry, Mrs. Featherworth. I'll get to the bottom of this," Buck promised, gripping his paintbrush tighter.
