The Silver Crown's Weight

Queen India la Pazza stood alone in her grand throne room, her silver crown feeling heavier than usual. The morning light streamed through tall windows, casting long shadows across the marble floor.

"Your Majesty," called her cousin Giovanna from the doorway. "You look troubled."

India turned, her brown eyes dim with worry. "Giovanna, I watch you with your growing belly, so happy with your child coming. I wonder if I will ever have such joy."

Giovanna approached carefully. "Cousin Philip speaks often of his love for you. Perhaps—"

"Philip loves many things," India said sharply. "But I remain alone in this castle, with no heir to follow me."

The queen walked to her window, gazing out at the courtyard below where children played. Her heart ached with longing she could not name.

The Bird Keeper's Secret

That evening, India walked through the castle gardens where a strange old woman sat feeding bread crumbs to a colorful parrot perched on her shoulder.

"Your Majesty looks sad," the woman said with twinkling eyes. "I am Rosa, the castle's bird keeper."

"I long for a child," India admitted, watching the parrot preen its bright feathers.

Rosa smiled mysteriously. "There are ancient ways to help such wishes. Follow me."

She led India to a hidden chamber beneath the castle where moonlight streamed through crystal windows. In the center sat a fountain made of shimmering comet ice.

"Make your wish here," Rosa whispered. "But be warned—magic gives exactly what you ask for, not always what you need."

India closed her eyes and wished desperately for a child, any child, right away.
