The Youngest Guardian
Sea Monster Cookie sat cross-legged on the frosting steps of the Cookie Kingdom's watchtower, polishing her black-and-turquoise sword. The seafoam sparkles that trailed behind the blade caught the sugar-crystal sunlight.
"Shadow Milk Cookie, Dark Cacao Cookie, and Pure Vanilla Cookie are the bravest warriors in all the land," she whispered to herself, watching their gingerbread figures disappear into the Candy Cane Forest.
Her teal eyes followed the three legendary cookies until they vanished behind the gumdrop trees. They were heading to investigate strange sounds near the Chocolate River—sounds that had been keeping the kingdom awake for three nights.
"I could help them," Sea Monster Cookie said, gripping her sword tighter. "I'm not just a little cookie."
But the older warriors had been clear. "You're too young for dangerous missions," Shadow Milk Cookie had said that morning, his dark eyes serious. "Stay here and guard the kingdom."
Sea Monster Cookie's white-and-turquoise hair whipped around her face as she stood up. The shell belt around her waist jingled softly.
The Silent Morning
Sea Monster Cookie jumped down from the watchtower steps and ran to the kingdom's main square. The usual morning sounds were missing—no laughter from the Cookie Children's Playground, no cheerful chatter from the Frosting Fountain.
"That's weird," she said, looking around the empty sugar-cobbled streets.
A small seagull landed on the fountain's edge, squawking loudly. Sea Monster Cookie had never seen a real seagull in the Cookie Kingdom before.
"What are you doing here?" she asked the white-feathered bird.
The seagull dropped a crumpled piece of parchment from its beak and flew away quickly. Sea Monster Cookie picked up the note with shaking hands.
"Help us," the message read in Shadow Milk Cookie's familiar handwriting. "Trapped in Crystal Cave. Dark magic. Can't escape. Don't come alone—too dangerous."
Sea Monster Cookie's heart pounded. The three legendary warriors needed her help, but they warned her not to come alone. She looked around the silent kingdom again.
"There's nobody left to come with me," she whispered, gripping her sword handle tighter. "They're all gone too."
The seafoam sparkles from her blade seemed dimmer in the empty morning light.
