The Crayon That Wouldn't Draw
Listen to audiobook
Morning Surprises
Atomic Crayon Doe stood at the window of her fortress, watching the morning sunlight paint Scribble City in golden hues. The crayon towers of her home gleamed teal against the sky, and below, the bustling streets filled with humans and forest animals heading to work.
"Today's the day!" she said, her brown eyes sparkling with excitement. The annual art contest was just three days away, and she'd been practicing her atomic crayon techniques for weeks.
She reached out her gloved hand and concentrated. Usually, her giant magic teal crayon would appear instantly, crackling with atomic energy. But today... nothing happened.
Doe frowned and tried again, focusing harder. Still nothing.
"That's strange," she muttered, removing her teal mask to rub her eyes. "Maybe I'm just tired."
She attempted once more, her ears perking up with determination. The familiar tingling sensation started in her fingertips, but then fizzled out completely.
Her crayon wasn't responding at all.
The Crash on Melody Street
Panic shot through Doe's chest. Without her crayon, how could she help anyone during the art contest? She paced around her fortress, her hooves clicking against the teal floor.
A loud crash echoed from outside. Through her window, she spotted smoke rising from downtown Scribble City near the music shop district.
"Someone needs help!" she said, forgetting about her broken powers for a moment.
Doe flew out of her fortress at super speed, her blue and black suit cutting through the morning air. She landed on Melody Street, where a crowd had gathered around Whiskers' Music Shop. The orange tabby cat who owned the store stood outside, wringing his paws.
"My delivery truck hit a pothole and crashed!" Whiskers wailed. "All the instruments for the school orchestra are scattered everywhere, and their big performance is tomorrow!"
Trumpets, violins, and drums lay dented across the pavement. The truck's back doors hung open like broken wings.
"Don't worry," Doe said, even though her stomach twisted with doubt. "I'll figure something out."
But how could she fix this mess without her magic crayon?
