The Crayon That Wouldn’t Stop Drawing
Listen to audiobook
The Quiet Button
Ms Crayon Axolotl stood in the Crayon Axolotl Aquarium’s main hall, where fish tanks floated in the air like glass bubbles. A blue-and-black console blinked beside a display that read: AUTO-DRAW MODE.
Her red cape swished as she dragged a thick safety mat onto the floor.
Pixel the helper-bot hovered near her mask. His green camera-eye zoomed in and out.
“Ms Crayon, last time your crayon drew a toaster that chased my charging cord,” Pixel said.
“That toaster was ambitious,” she said, and set down a pair of goggles. “Today, we go tiny. A paperclip. No heroics.”
She lifted her giant blue crayon. It felt warm in her hand, like it had been waiting.
Pixel tapped the touchscreen with a small metal finger.
“See this? Stop button. Auto-draw needs a stop command.”
Ms Crayon Axolotl took a breath, then pressed START.
The crayon clicked.
A blue line slid onto the mat… then kept going, curling toward the open gallery doorway
Blue Line, Blue Problem
The blue line slid under the aquarium doorway and zipped across the sunny plaza outside.
Pixel—the little floating helper-bot with the round white metal body and single green camera-eye—whirred after it.
Ms Crayon Axolotl shot forward, cape snapping. “Okay. It drew a line. Lines are calm.”
The line looped around a mail-box kiosk and scribbled a fat square.
With a pop, the kiosk sprouted a shiny chute and a spinning arm.
A brown otter in a yellow delivery vest skidded his package cart to a stop. “Hey! That’s my route!”
The spinning arm flung a box. It rocketed past a statue, tore open in midair, and burst into a shower of packing peanuts.
Pixel’s tiny fingers tapped his wrist-screen. “Remote access! I can hit STOP!”
He frowned. “It says… ‘Command accepted.’ But the crayon is still drawing.”
Another box launched—straight toward a glass sculpture garden.
Ms Crayon Axolotl clenched her giant blue crayon like it might behave if she stared hard enough.
“Pixel, get behind my cape!”
She grabbed the bot and lifted off, chasing the runaway line as it scribbled toward the sculptures
