The Crooked Crayon Contest
Listen to audiobook
Morning Preparations
Crayon Zebra Doe stood at the window of CZD Tower, watching Savannah Forest City wake up below. The morning sun cast zebra-stripe shadows across her blue supersuit as she adjusted her yellow gloves.
"Today's the big day," she whispered to herself, summoning her giant blue crayon. It glowed softly in her hands, but something felt off. She tried drawing a simple circle in the air, but the line came out wobbly and crooked.
"What's wrong with you today?" she asked the crayon, frowning. Every line she drew zigzagged like a lightning bolt.
Her phone buzzed with a text from Mayor Elephant: "Art contest starts at noon! Can't wait to see your entry!"
Crayon Zebra Doe's stomach fluttered with nerves. The whole city would be watching. She attempted another practice drawing, but her crayon produced the same wonky, unpredictable lines.
"Maybe I'm just nervous," she told herself, though doubt crept into her voice.
The Morning Delivery
Crayon Zebra Doe decided to head downtown early to scout the contest location. She grabbed her phone and flew out of CZD Tower, her blue cape fluttering behind her.
The contest was being held in Central Park, where colorful banners already hung from the trees. As she landed near the fountain, a small mail truck pulled up with a screech.
"Package for Crayon Zebra Doe!" called out the driver, a cheerful otter wearing a brown uniform and cap. He had sleek dark fur and bright amber eyes.
"That's me," she said, puzzled. She hadn't ordered anything.
The otter handed her a mysterious box wrapped in silver paper. "Someone really wants you to have this before the contest starts."
Crayon Zebra Doe shook the box gently. Something rattled inside.
"Who sent it?" she asked, but the otter was already driving away.
She tore open the wrapping to find a small device with blinking red lights and a note: "This will fix your crayon problem. Trust me. - A Friend."
Her stomach dropped. How did someone know about her wonky crayon? And who was watching her practice this morning?
