Morning Reflections
Artwork Doe stood on the highest balcony of her castle, watching Canvas City wake up below. The morning sun painted the art supply walls of her home in brilliant colors—paintbrush towers gleamed silver, and the crayon ramparts shimmered like rainbows.
"Good morning, Canvas City," she whispered, her breath creating small puffs in the cool air.
Her antlers caught the sunlight as she turned to admire her favorite wall—a magnificent mosaic made entirely of colored pencils arranged in swirling patterns. The pencils had been a gift from the city's children last year.
But something felt different today. As she reached out to touch the pencil wall, her gloved fingers met cold, rough concrete instead of smooth wood and paint.
"That's impossible," she said, stepping back in surprise.
Where vibrant colored pencils should have been, a patch of boring gray concrete stared back at her. The beautiful artwork was simply gone.
The Gray Messenger
Artwork Doe pressed her palm against the concrete patch again, hoping she had imagined it. The cold, rough surface confirmed her worst fears.
"This can't be happening," she muttered, stepping back from the wall.
A sharp whistle cut through the morning air. She turned to see a hummingbird hovering near her balcony, its emerald feathers catching the sunlight. The tiny bird darted frantically in circles, chirping in distress.
"What's wrong, little one?" Artwork Doe asked, extending her gloved hand.
The hummingbird landed on her finger and pointed its beak toward the city below. Following its gaze, Artwork Doe gasped. Gray patches were spreading across Canvas City like a disease. The Rainbow Bridge that connected the art districts had lost its vibrant stripes. The Sculpture Gardens looked dull and lifeless.
"It's not just my castle," she whispered in horror.
The hummingbird chirped urgently and took flight, circling her antlers before zooming toward the city center. It wanted her to follow.
Without hesitation, Artwork Doe leaped from the balcony and soared into the sky. As she flew over Canvas City, she could see the gray spreading faster. Whatever was stealing the creativity from her world was getting stronger.
