Morning Routines

Ms. Super Caribou floated three feet above her crystal bedroom floor, practicing her morning stretches. The translucent walls of her fortress caught the early sunlight, casting rainbow patterns across her blue supersuit.

"Another peaceful day in Tundra Metropolis," she said, adjusting her red cape.

Below, the city bustled with arctic foxes in business suits and polar bears operating food trucks. Her fortress stood at the heart of it all, a gleaming beacon of safety.

She touched down and walked to her control room. The massive viewing crystal showed the city streets in perfect detail. A walrus family crossed Main Street while penguins waited at the bus stop.

Everything looked normal. Too normal.

Ms. Super Caribou frowned. Something felt different today, though she couldn't pinpoint what. The fortress crystals seemed quieter than usual. She pressed her palm against the nearest wall.

For just a moment, the crystal surface felt warm. Then cold. Then warm again.

"That's odd," she murmured, pulling her hand back.

The First Crack

A loud CRACK echoed through the fortress.

Ms. Super Caribou spun around. The crystal wall behind her had a hairline fracture running from floor to ceiling.

"What in the tundra—"

CRACK! CRACK! CRACK!

More fractures appeared across every crystal surface. The viewing screen flickered and went dark. Emergency lights cast eerie red shadows through the translucent walls.

Ms. Super Caribou pressed her communicator. "Dr. Frost, are you there?"

Static filled the air. Then a familiar voice crackled through. "Super Caribou! Thank goodness. I'm getting seismic readings from your fortress that make no sense."

Dr. Frost was a polar bear scientist who monitored the city's geological activity from his underground laboratory.

"The crystals are fracturing," she said, touching another wall. It felt ice-cold now. "Something's making them unstable."

"That's impossible. Those crystals have been stable for decades. Unless..." Dr. Frost paused. "There's something else. I'm detecting unusual frequency patterns coming from beneath Tundra Metropolis. They started about an hour ago."

Another loud CRACK made Ms. Super Caribou jump. A chunk of crystal fell from the ceiling, shattering on the floor.

"Doc, I think my home might be turning into a weapon."
