Morning Shadows
Crayon Doe adjusted her shimmering cape as she landed gracefully on the crystal terrace of Crystal Cloud Castle. The morning sun painted the floating castle in brilliant hues, but something felt different today. The massive crystals that normally blazed with rainbow light seemed... dimmer somehow.
"Good morning, Princess Crystal!" she called out cheerfully to the castle's guardian, a young woman with flowing silver hair who emerged from behind a towering amethyst pillar.
Princess Crystal's usual bright smile wavered. "Oh, Crayon Doe, I'm so glad you're here! I've been worried sick about something, but I wasn't sure if I should bother anyone with it."
Crayon Doe's big brown eyes filled with concern. "What's troubling you?"
"It's the crystals," Princess Crystal whispered, glancing around nervously. "They're losing their shine. Look closely at the emerald wall behind you."
Crayon Doe turned and gasped. Where the emerald should have sparkled like captured starlight, it appeared cloudy and dull, as if covered by an invisible film.
The Water Maker
Crayon Doe stepped closer to examine the emerald wall. Her hoof touched something wet on the crystal floor. She looked down to see small puddles forming beneath several of the largest crystals.
"Princess Crystal, look at this!" she called out.
Princess Crystal hurried over, her silver hair catching the morning light. "Oh no! The crystals are... they're sweating!"
A gentle voice spoke from behind them. "That's not sweat, young ones."
They turned to see an elderly woman emerging from the castle's inner chambers. She had short gray hair and wore a simple blue dress covered in water stains. In her weathered hands, she carried a bucket filled with crystal-clear water.
"I'm Keeper Marina," the woman said with a kind smile. "I've been taking care of these crystals for forty years. What you're seeing is condensation - the crystals are losing their inner fire."
Crayon Doe's ears perked up. "Their inner fire?"
"Each crystal needs to be polished with special spring water every month," Keeper Marina explained. "But I've grown too old to climb the tallest ones. Without proper care, they collect moisture instead of light." She set down her heavy bucket with a sigh. "Soon, the whole castle will fall from the clouds."
