The Quiet Path

Zed stepped onto the stone path of Thistledown Park, his crystal staff catching the dappled sunlight. The noise of the city faded behind him like a distant memory.

"Perfect," he whispered, adjusting his small satchel. His pointed ears twitched at the sound of birds singing overhead.

The wooden bridge stretched ahead, arching gracefully over the clear stream below. Zed could see fish darting between smooth stones. Beyond the trees, tower tops peeked through green leaves.

He walked slowly, breathing in the sweet air. Flowers bloomed in unexpected places - purple ones tucked beneath oak trees, yellow ones climbing fence posts.

A squirrel chattered at him from a low branch.

"Hello there," Zed grinned, his green eyes sparkling.

The squirrel's tail flicked nervously before it scampered higher into the tree.

Something felt different today. The shadows seemed deeper than usual. Zed paused on the bridge, gripping his staff tighter. The crystal's blue glow pulsed gently.

He shook his head and continued walking, but kept glancing over his shoulder.

The Mail Carrier's Warning

Zed's ears twitched again. The sound wasn't birds this time.

Footsteps crunched on gravel behind him. Heavy ones.

He spun around. A woman in a blue postal uniform hurried toward him, her mail bag bouncing against her hip. Her face looked worried.

"Young man!" she called out. "Don't go any farther into the park today!"

Zed gripped his staff tighter. "Why? What's wrong?"

The mail carrier stopped a few feet away, breathing hard. "I've been delivering letters here for fifteen years. Never seen shadows move like that before." She pointed toward the deeper part of the park, where the trees grew thicker. "Started this morning. They're not natural."

"Moving shadows?" Zed's green eyes widened.

"Flowing like water. Reaching for things." She shuddered. "One tried to grab my mail bag right out of my hands. I barely got away."

Before Zed could ask more questions, something dark slithered between the trees behind her. It stretched toward them like a long, grasping finger.

The mail carrier screamed and stumbled backward.

The shadow creature pounced forward, wrapping around Zed's ankles like thick rope.
