Restless Hearts
Hicarry stretched her nine fox tails in the morning sunlight that filtered through the cherry blossoms of the Silver Stone Kitsune Temple. Around her, young Kitsune children tumbled and played, their laughter echoing off the ancient stone walls.
"Race you to the maple grove!" called Yuki, a silver-furred friend with three tails.
Hicarry's amber eyes sparkled as she bounded after him, her black hair with its golden swirls streaming behind her. They leaped over moss-covered rocks and climbed the twisted branches of the old pine trees. When they reached the top, Hicarry gazed out beyond their peaceful realm.
"Don't you ever wonder what's out there?" she asked, adjusting her black Kitsune mask.
Yuki shrugged. "Why would we need anything else? We have everything here."
But Hicarry's heart tugged toward the distant human world she'd glimpsed through the temple's magic portals. Something called to her—a hunger for experiences beyond their quiet mountain home.
The Portal's Promise
That evening, Elder Miko approached Hicarry as she sat alone by the temple's moonlit pond. The ancient Kitsune had silver fur streaked with white and wore flowing robes that rustled like autumn leaves.
"I've been watching you, young one," Elder Miko said, her voice soft but knowing. "Your heart seeks something beyond these sacred grounds."
Hicarry's ears drooped slightly. "Is it wrong to want more?"
Elder Miko smiled, revealing sharp teeth. "Tomorrow, a portal opens to the human world. Their school seeks to learn about our kind for one day only. I had planned to send someone older, but perhaps..." She paused, studying Hicarry's hopeful expression.
"You would let me go?"
"One day. You would wear human clothes and hide your tails and ears with magic. But remember—you represent all Kitsune."
Hicarry's amber eyes widened. Her heart pounded with excitement and terror.
"The portal opens at dawn," Elder Miko continued. "Think carefully. The human world is loud, confusing, and nothing like our peaceful home."
Hicarry nodded quickly. "I want to try."
Elder Miko chuckled. "Then prepare yourself, curious one."
