The City That Never Sleeps in Silence

Creative Zoo City never stopped moving.

From the top of Canvas Fortress, Super Artist Lion could see everything — the zigzag streets, the painted rooftops, the neon signs flickering above the Saturday morning crowds. The city smelled like fresh pretzels and bus exhaust and somebody's watercolor class.

He stretched his arms wide and let the wind ruffle his red cape. Golden fur caught the sunlight. He loved mornings up here.

"You're going to get crumbs on my observation deck again, aren't you?" said a dry, unimpressed voice behind him.

Super Artist Lion turned around. Petra — a compact, no-nonsense tortoise in a lab coat — stood at the doorway holding a tablet and a cup of tea.

"Good morning to you too," he said, grinning.

Petra squinted at the skyline. Something crossed her face — not a smile. Something quieter.

"The red tulip district," she said softly. "Does it look different to you?"

What the Parrot Knew

Super Artist Lion squinted at the red tulip district. Petra was right. The red was gone — not faded, not dim. Just gone. The rooftops down there were the color of old newsprint.

"Give me your tablet," he said.

Petra, the compact tortoise in the white lab coat, handed it over without a word. He pulled up the city's live satellite feed — Creative Zoo City streamed in real time on a public city app — and dragged the view across every district.

Blue fountain plaza: grey. Yellow bakery row: grey. The purple pedestrian bridge: grey.

"It's not just the tulip district," he said quietly.

A sharp screech cut the air. A parrot — orange beak, brilliant green feathers — shot up over the fortress wall and crash-landed on the railing. He wore a tiny red vest and a cracked name tag that read MANGO.

"Gone!" Mango squawked, gripping the railing with both feet. "The painter on Cobalt Street — she was painting a mural, a big sunrise, all orange and gold — and the colors just vanished off her brush mid-stroke! Poof! She's standing there right now — brush in the air, canvas white as a wall!"
