The Dimension Sandwich Crisis
Listen to audiobook
Rainbow Ribbons and Empty Plates
Penelope adjusted her rainbow cloak and stepped into Starlinghold Academy's cafeteria. The massive hall stretched before her, filled with floating tables where students from different dimensions chatted over lunch.
"Another masterpiece, Mrs. Crumpet!" called out Zara, a blue-skinned girl with silver hair, holding up what looked like an ordinary turkey sandwich.
Mrs. Crumpet, the cafeteria manager, beamed from behind the counter. Her gray hair was pulled back in a neat bun, and flour dusted her green apron. "Secret ingredient is love, dear!"
Penelope grabbed a tray and approached the sandwich station. She'd been sketching all morning and her stomach rumbled loudly.
"One roast beef, please," she said.
Mrs. Crumpet handed her a perfectly wrapped sandwich. As Penelope turned to find a seat, she noticed something odd. The sandwich in her hands felt lighter than it should.
She unwrapped the paper carefully. Inside was... nothing. Just an empty wrapper with a few crumbs that sparkled strangely in the dimensional lighting.
The Sparkling Trail
Penelope stared at the empty wrapper, then looked around the cafeteria. Other students were unwrapping their sandwiches too. A centaur boy at table seven held up an empty wrapper. So did a girl with pointed ears near the window.
"Mrs. Crumpet!" Penelope called out, walking back to the counter. "There's no sandwich in my wrapper!"
Mrs. Crumpet's face went pale. "Oh dear, not again!"
"Again?" Penelope asked.
Before Mrs. Crumpet could answer, a small sparrow landed on the counter. It had bright golden feathers and wore a tiny blue vest.
"Professor Pip!" Mrs. Crumpet exclaimed. "What brings you here?"
The sparrow chirped rapidly, flapping his wings in distress.
"He says the dimensional kitchen monitors are going crazy," Mrs. Crumpet translated. "Something is pulling our food through the walls between worlds."
Penelope watched more students discover empty wrappers. Some laughed, others groaned with hunger. A few looked worried.
"The sandwiches are disappearing into other dimensions," Mrs. Crumpet continued. "And Professor Pip says angry messages are coming from those worlds. Apparently, our roast beef is landing in very inconvenient places."
The sparrow chirped again, more urgently this time.
