The Drawing Contest Disaster
Listen to audiobook
The Golden Pen's Call
Penelope Starwrite adjusted her rainbow cloak as she climbed the spiral staircase to her favorite drawing room. The morning sun streamed through the star-shaped windows of Starwrite Manor, casting sparkles across her art supplies.
"Today's the day," she whispered, pulling out a fresh sketchpad. The Chapter City Art Contest flyer sat pinned to her easel—first prize was a golden pen that supposedly belonged to the city's founder.
She picked up her charcoal pencil and began sketching a small butterfly. As she added the final wing detail, something strange happened. The butterfly's wings seemed to flutter on the page.
Penelope blinked hard and looked again. The drawing was perfectly still.
"I really need more sleep," she laughed, shaking her head.
But as she turned to gather more supplies, she heard a tiny rustling sound behind her. When she glanced back at her sketchpad, the butterfly drawing had completely vanished from the page.
Her pencil clattered to the floor.
The Hummingbird's Warning
Penelope stared at the empty page where her butterfly had been. Her hands trembled as she picked up the fallen pencil.
"That's impossible," she whispered.
A tiny voice chirped from the windowsill. "Actually, it's quite possible when you're a Starwrite."
Penelope spun around. A brilliant green hummingbird hovered near the star-shaped window, its wings beating so fast they blurred.
"You can talk?" Penelope gasped.
"Of course I can talk. I'm Zephyr, guardian of artistic magic in Chapter City." The hummingbird zipped closer. "And you, young artist, have just awakened something very dangerous."
"Dangerous? It was just a butterfly drawing."
Zephyr's tiny eyes grew serious. "Your drawings don't just come to life, Penelope. They escape into the real world. That butterfly is now flying somewhere in Chapter City, and it won't be the last."
Penelope's rainbow cloak shimmered as she stepped backward. "But the art contest is today. I have to compete."
"If you draw anything else before learning control, you could unleash chaos on the entire city," Zephyr warned. "The contest will be the least of everyone's worries."
